CAVALIERS IN ART THROUGH THE CENTURIES

"Nollekins" W. H. Dunton

It is only natural once we become owners of these wonderful little dogs that we start to research the history of the breed. In my research I found that not only have Cavalier King Charles Spaniels been loving companions over the centuries but also favorite subjects of painters all over the world. These little dogs have been the subjects of many paintings both modern and by some of the old masters. They have been portrayed both with and without their people and have made beautiful and interesting artwork.

It is interesting to see how the breed standard differed over the centuries and throughout different countries .  You may question whether or not a few of them are actually Cavaliers at all.  Many of these pieces can be purchased either as original oils, reproduction oils and prints or limited edition prints. You may also find some of them for sale on auction sites such as EBAY and AMAZON. Other pieces can only be found in Museum art shops or right here on the WWW. I have included links to some of the sites where they can be purchased as well as the sites where they can be viewed. Some of these images are presented as thumbnails and you can click on the image to view a larger size of the artwork.

If you are interested in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels please visit my Cavalier Informational Page. Many links to pages containing information about health issues and how to find an ethical breeder.

Another Cavalier fancier has a Cavalier art section on her website. Rosemary Powell's Barnaby's Cavalier Attitudes has Cavalier art links as well as other Cavalieria for the collector. Needlework, figurines, pottery. Many links here of interest.

Some of the history of the breed and how it developed including a few historical images can be found at Miss Emma's website.

I am always interested in seeing more Cavalier art. If you have found any new links on the web to Cavalier art, or are yourself an artist and have painted these precious subjects please email me and let me know. I can feature your painting or print on my website. The collection of 20th century Cavalier art is increasing as modern artists discover the joys of painting this delightful breed.

Cavalier prints available from Art.com are now located on their own pages for your convenience. This should make shopping easier. Remember that any prints you purchase can raise money for The Lucky Star Fund. Just use the links provided on my Art.com Cavalier Art pages.

The Lucky Star Fund, named after it's first successful rescue, was started by a group of Cavalier owners. Concerned about the plight of Cavaliers in pet stores and puppy mills they have rescued over 26 Cavaliers in the past year. Commissions earned from purchases through my Art.com links help to fund the purchase of these Cavaliers from pet stores and puppy mills.
